You will have heard or read about the murder in the news. Some time later you may have watched the drama or the documentary on tv, or downloaded the podcast. You may even have bought the book. In all likelihood you will be far more familiar with the name of the perpetrator of the dreadful crime, than you are with the name of the victim.
Because of the nature of my work, I have spent a considerable amount of time in the company of those who have been bereaved by murder or manslaughter. Parents, siblings, friends, work colleagues and more, have all opened their hearts to me. As a result, I know what the catastrophic effects of losing someone to murder or manslaughter can be. The consequences of these crimes can last a lifetime.
‘National Support After Murder or Manslaughter’, (SAMM), are a long-established and wonderful charity who help those who have been affected by the most devastating crime there is. I am very proud to be taking on my fundraising challenge, in an effort to raise funds for them.
My aim is to walk ‘A Million Steps in May’. This equates to 32,259 steps every day for 31 days, without respite. My stride length dictates that I will have to walk around 15 miles each and every day. This might be a breeze for an Olympic marathon runner, but I’m 61 years old, I weigh 15st 11lbs, and it’s fair to say that I have enjoyed too many pies and too many pints in recent years! I will be severely tested, physically and mentally, but it’s not about me, it’s about raising funds to help those who have bereaved by murder and manslaughter.
You can join in. You don’t have to walk 32,259 steps every day, far from it, you can set your own personal target, and help to raise money for SAMM along the way. Simply visit https://givepenny.com/event/a-million-steps-in-may and click on ‘Join Campaign’.
If you would like to donate a few pennies, or maybe a few pounds, that would be absolutely brilliant, and very much appreciated by SAMM, and those that they support. Here’s the link for donations – https://givepenny.com/peterbleksley_a_million_steps_in_may
If you would like to find out more about SAMM, and the work that they do, please visit –https://samm.org.uk/
And finally, if you would like to join me for a few, or maybe a few thousand, socially distanced steps, around the open spaces of Bexley, please message me. I know some very good places to get a cuppa!
Thank you for your time. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go for a walk..!
